The basket of Stuff

Some people have a drawer full of miscellaneous household bits and pieces.

We have three baskets. In the kitchen alone.

They’re full of charging cables for devices nobody remembers owning, battery chargers, enough CR2032 button batteries to open a small electrical shop, old glasses kept ‘just in case’ and keys to locks that may or may not still exist.

There’s also a generous selection of safety pins, sticky hooks, nail clippers, broken calculators and, for reasons nobody can explain, an ancient handheld Donkey Kong game.

It’s not rubbish. It’s all potentially useful stuff. We just haven’t the faintest idea what most of it is useful for.

Occasionally, someone suggests having a clear-out. We all agree it’s a splendid idea. Then someone holds up a cable and asks, “Does anyone know what this is for?” Nobody does.

Back in the basket it goes. Just in case.

I suspect we’ll be leaving the lot to the children in our wills.
